What is an in-app announcement?

An in-app announcement is a message displayed directly inside a product to inform users about a new feature, update, or change, typically shown as a banner, modal, or slide-out panel triggered on login or a specific action. Unlike a changelog, which users have to seek out on their own, an in-app announcement is pushed to the user at a moment when they're already active in the product.

Formats an in-app announcement can take

• Banner: a persistent but non-blocking strip, usually at the top of the screen, for lower-urgency updates.

• Modal: a blocking overlay for updates significant enough to warrant full attention before the user continues.

• Slide-out panel: a side panel that appears without interrupting the current screen, often used for feature spotlights.

• Hotspot or badge: a small visual indicator pointing to where a new feature now lives, for lightweight, low-friction awareness.

Announcement fatigue is the real risk

The failure mode with in-app announcements isn't usually the format, it's the frequency and targeting. Announcements shown too often, or shown to users who have no reason to care about the specific update, train people to dismiss anything that looks like an announcement without reading it.

Why segmentation matters more than the message itself

The fix is user segmentation: showing an announcement about a new admin permission only to users with admin roles.
