What is a growth loop?
Why do some products seem to grow on their own while others need an ever-larger marketing budget just to stay flat? Often, the answer is the difference between a funnel and a loop. A growth loop is a self-reinforcing cycle where the output of one user's activity becomes the input that acquires or activates the next user, without requiring a new campaign to restart the process each time.
How a growth loop differs from a funnel
A funnel is linear: awareness leads to consideration, consideration leads to signup, signup leads to conversion, and the cycle ends. A loop doesn't end. What one user does at the bottom of the loop, an invite sent, a piece of content published, a document shared, feeds back into the top of the loop and becomes the reason the next user shows up.
Common types of growth loops
Referral loops: existing users invite new ones, often incentivized, and those new users eventually invite more.
Content loops: user-generated content, such as public documents, profiles, or reports, gets indexed by search engines and attracts new visitors organically.
Viral loops: usage of the product itself is visible to non-users, such as a shared link or embedded widget, creating awareness as a byproduct of normal use.
The product is usually the engine
For product-led growth companies, the loop's engine is typically the product itself rather than a separate growth team's campaign. Better onboarding and activation rate don't only retain the user who went through them, they increase the odds that user becomes an input into the next cycle.
