What is a heatmap?
A heatmap is a visual representation of user interaction data, overlaid on a page or screen, that shows where users click, move, or spend the most time, using color intensity to indicate concentration. Areas with heavy interaction appear "hot," typically rendered in red or orange, while ignored areas stay "cold," rendered in blue or left blank.
The three common types of heatmaps
Click heatmaps: show where users click or tap, useful for identifying which elements draw attention and which go ignored.
Move heatmaps: track cursor movement as a proxy for visual attention, based on the correlation between where people look and where they move their mouse.
Scroll heatmaps: show how far down a page users typically scroll, useful for identifying where attention drops off on long pages.
Each type answers a different question, and most teams need more than one to get a full picture of how a page or screen is actually being used.
What a heatmap can't tell you on its own
A cold zone around a feature is ambiguous by itself. It might mean users don't need the feature, or it might mean they can't find it, or it might mean they found it once, got confused, and never went back. A heatmap shows the pattern but not the reason behind it, which is why it works best as a starting point rather than a conclusion.
Pairing heatmaps with other signals
Product teams typically confirm a heatmap pattern with session recordings of individual users, or with funnel analysis to see whether the cold zone correlates with drop-off. If the pattern turns out to be a discoverability problem, the fix is usually a piece of in-app guidance, such as a hotspot or tooltip pointing users toward the underused feature.
Where heatmaps are most useful
Heatmaps tend to add the most value on high-traffic, static-layout pages: dashboards, onboarding screens, and pricing or settings pages where the layout doesn't change per user. On highly dynamic or personalized screens, a heatmap aggregates data that doesn't mean much when averaged together.
